Starting from the 2024/25 season, the Champions League will undergo significant changes, promising an exciting and remarkable new format. Here’s a simplified breakdown:
- The tournament will now feature 36 teams instead of the previous 32.
- Groups will be replaced by a periodic table, with teams drawn to play against 8 different opponents.
- Each team will play four home and four away matches, determined by draw.
- The top 8 teams in the table will advance directly to the round of 16.
- Teams ranking 9th to 24th will compete in home and away elimination matches to determine the remaining 8 spots in the round of 16.
- Teams ranking 25th to 36th will be eliminated without the possibility of relegation to the Europa League.
- Matches will be scheduled for Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
- All matches in the final round will be played simultaneously on one day, following a league system.
Currently, 28 of the 36 participating teams for the next Champions League season have been confirmed.
